Born in Nanjing, China, Julian Shew began his musical career at the age of four with lessons from his father on the Chinese fiddle.  He attended Jiangsu Province School of Arts and then Nanjing College of Fine Arts and received a bachelor’s degree in cello performance.  He then joined the Symphony Orchestra of Jiangsu Province as principal cellist and assistant conductor.

Julian Shew received his post-graduate study in the United States with Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Orchestral Conducting from University of Kansas.  He has served as Music Director and Conductor of University of Kansas Symphony, Lawrence Symphony, Hutchinson Symphony, Hays Symphony, Mankato Area Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Gustavus Orchestra.  He has been also lecturer at University of Kansas and assistant professor at Fort Hays State University and Gustavus Adolphus College.

Julian Shew has worked with such conductors as Gunther Schuller, Leonard Slatkin, Daniel Lewis, Murry Sidlin, and Otto-Werner Mueller, and has further studied conducting at Aspen; Sandpoint; Tanglewood; Domain Forget, Canada; Yale University; and Vienna Conservatory, Austria.  He won a Fulbright nomination for the position of music director of the State Symphony and Youth Symphony of Cyprus.  In addition, two of his compositions won the first prizes of his city and province contest in China.

A seasoned guest conductor and reviewed as "...imbued with tenderness and grace but at the same time with nerve and vigour", Dr. Julian Shew has guest conducted with repeated engagements in the U.S., Bulgaria, Albania, Russia, and Turkey with such  ensembles as National Opera of Bulgaria, Sofia Soloisti Chamber Orchestra, State Philharmonic of Burgas (he is the principal guest conductor), National Radio and Television Orchestra of Albania, Saint Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, United Chinese Musicians Symphony Orchestra of Los Angeles, Bulgaria National Philharmonic Choir, and BASSO Symphony Orchestra of Turkey (a recording of two compositions with this orchestra has been released on compact disc), and has collaborated with soloists from France, Bulgaria, Germany, China, England, Albania, Turkey, Romania, Russia, and the U.S., including the winners of many major international competitions.

Currently, Professor Shew is the Music Director and Conductor of Georgia State University Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta, U.S.A.
